After some phone calls it doesn't appear there is much that individual citizens can do to assist the two area humane organizations in this problem other than being diligent in calling authorities if you suspect something. If you are suspicious because of the appearance of a neighbor's dog - constant injuries apparent, exercising dogs on treadmill, usually very large chain on dog - call humane societies. If you think a fight is in progress, call police. These fights attract large noisy crowds so even if it just turns out to be a party that is too noisy and being a nuisance for the neighbors, the proper authorities are there. If it is a dog fight, police will notify humane soc. Please keep your eyes and ears open and look out for your neighbor's dogs. They are the ones who truly need our help.

Good thought Nancyo and being diligent is the word...a Police Officer can only be in one place at at time...If some one listens to their scanner...sometime and you don't miss it...there are sometime 80-90 calls a night that's for 6-7 cars on the street.... the other night a few weeks ago they had that many by around 7:30...unbelievable....some might say...

I'll add to my above post - call police and Singerman! I think maybe someone who isn't bound by the law should take these guys out in the alley and give them a taste of what it is like to be mauled. I worry also about reports of dogs being stolen from yards. Many times these are smaller dogs which I'm afraid may be used as bait. Needless to tell you guys, I simply have no use for anyone who will mistreat an animal. They are lower than low in my book.

NancyO....I apologize that I missed these posts several months ago. Can you provide me with additional info on known addresses or offenders. Use my personal email at mayor@cityofdanville.org and I will see if these problems have resolved. Again I apologize for missing the posts....we did pass an ordinance in May which increased greatly some of the language regarding dog fighting, but in our neighborhood blitzes coming up, we can follow up on this as well. We see alot of neglect to animals which we focus on often, but let me know more about dog fighting. Thanks.....and again I am sorry for being so slow in my response.

Scott I don't have any info on suspected homes or areas. Was just trying to find out what citizens can do to help alleviate the situation. As mentioned in prior posts on this thread, all of us who are animal lovers will be diligent in calling the authorities if we see anything suspicious. I am very glad to hear that animal welfare is being addressed along with the area clean up blitz. That is an excellent time to observe how animals are being treated especially conditions of secure housing and clean, unfrozen water now that the colder weather is upon us. Thanks for your concern. This subject goes way beyond the fights because of the other activities which occur at the same time. None of us want either the dog fights nor the other illegal actions in our neighborhoods.

Dog fights or not, the bottom line is that the police or any other government lackey needs a search warrant to enter private property. It is extremely worrisome to hear about "blitz" inspections. It does not matter what any government official in this two bit town that has long ago lost it’s luster has to say. The Bill of Rights applies to Danville, IL as well as any town in this nation.
I would also like to point out that it is highly inappropriate for nancyo to suggest someone do physical harm to another person no matter the reason. What nancyo is suggesting is vigilante behavior which is a crime. Any other website I have used would not permit anyone let alone an assistant moderator to encourage criminal activity. I also find it to be extremely disturbing that the Mayor did not point out the inappropriateness of this remark and did not distance himself from that comment. It makes me wonder if it is the policy of this city to physically harm individuals it suspects have committed a crime.
Considering the fact that our homes will be searched and we will be beaten for crimes, I'm starting to think I live in Nazi Germany and not Danville, IL.

The problem I have with this thread is I have not read anyone's post saying they have actually witnessed this problem in the Danville area. Or did I miss something?

I was going to ask that myself, maybe I live a sheltered life, but I have never heard of that here in Danville..

infowarrior.....the city does not and cannot enter your private residence without a search warrant. The inspection blitz we are performing are exterior code enforcement violations which can be seen from any public viewing area (the street, the alley, etc). Often however there are easy signs even from a public viewing area that animal cruelty, animal neglect, or dangerous and vicious animals exists. This is not a violation of anyone's rights, but instead an attempt to clean up our city, restore some pride, and improve the living conditions and market value of our residences. No rights will be harmed in the making of this program.

Sometimes you have to look at the intent of a message, and not just the words that have been printed. Knowing Nancy the way that I do, she is very passionate about the welfare of animals, and I am sure would never intentionally have some one beaten, or injured. I am sure everyone has said things about how "justice" should be dealt out. I could say that anyone who beats an animal should be shot, but of course most people would know that I am not actually advcoating that.

I don't feel that just because I am an assistant moderator, I am not allowed to express my feelings. And animal welfare is an area I am EXTREMELY passionate about. I have done animal rescue for years and have yet to physically attack anyone. And am afraid I don't have the funds to hire a hitman But if you had witnessed some of the conditions in which people keep their "pets" you might also feel as adamant as I do. I am certain Scott, as well as others on this forum, have come to know me well enough to realize I wasn't condoning actual physical harm to anyone. If you took my words literally, I do apologize.l

Nancy, you are right on track. Always have been. It is sad when we attack each other over mis-interpreted words, intentional or not.
