Walk Light, Gilbert-Fourth Intersection
« on: March 02, 2006, 11:23:21 AM »

This intersection needs some attention. This is a direct route to and from Southview Middle School, and it is used by many pedestrians. It is the ONLY crosswalk available to cross Gilbert St between Main St & Tilton at Monical's. The walk light (which only comes on when the walk light button has been depressed) is too short AND the light turns green for Fourth Street traffic. It is a very dangerous intersection to be a pedestrian. I think when the walk button is depressed, ample time should be given for pedestrians to cross and the vehicle traffic lights should remain red for the safety of the pedestrians. I've had close calls with my children whether riding bikes or walking, we've tried to push a friend across the street in a wheelchair & were almost hit by a driver with no patience, and I've seen many school children playing frogger in the crosswalk. I'm sure the amount of times the walk button is depressed can be measured, and I'm definite it wouldn't affect the flow of vehicle traffic. Some child or another citizen is going to be injured at that intersection one of these days if this is not changed.

If anyone has any information to whom I should contact about this, I'd really appreciate it. I was going to call the mayor's office, but I figured I'd put it here since he visits. Is the state in control of that intersection? I guess if it's a state issue, I need to start making some phone calls...

Bet if you talked to a cop or public safety building, they could tell you who governs traffic control devices there.

The city has the Traffic Commision. If it's a designated a pedestrian crossing then it's suppose to be lengthy enough for even the frailest to cross. I am sure it's just a matter of adjustment. I am sure if you bring your complaint through the proper channels it will be resolved.

If it was his brother Jack, I believe he passed away in 1999.
