That is PATHETIC WE ARE WORSE THAN EAST ST.LOIS.

If you had actually ever been to East St. Louis, you would realize how completely untrue that statement is. And perhaps the Mayor hasn't responded because he is so tired of constantly responding to baseless rumors like these. If he's trying so hard to solve the problems related to public housing and to clean up Section 8, why on earth would he turn around and recruit people from there to come up here? The city is already strapped for cash dealing with social service needs of it's current residents, and the mayor ran on the platform of making Danville a better place. To think he would actually do what you suggested is ridiculous.

I can only hope it's a rumor, But as I have heard from a few more "in the know" I wouldnt be so sure about that quite yet. And to answer the question why would he?.....like everything else it's all about the money!

Revenue from new businesses and housing is sustainable; money from public housing is not only not sustainable, but it actually ends up costing cities because of other services incurred. In addition, people who need public housing aren't going to pay much in taxes, so the city really has nothing to gain by bringing them here. Again, I really can't imagine the mayor being so passionate about cleaning up Danville and getting it going in the right direction on one day, then turning around and doing the opposite on another. I don't know what some people get out of spreading rumors like these, but they aren't helping anybody.

How do you know it's a rumor?......I hope you're correct!.....I would like verification from the mayor though. The mayor was quite active in this forum pre-election........now what has happened?

well, I really hate to prove anyone wrong, but I got the following e-mail from the Mayor and he asked me to pass it along:

Tuck.....

My computer at home is shot and still cannot link onto the website to reply....I think it is my computer (not the website) and needs to be replaced.....and I have been swamped at work and have not had a minute to log on to the site and reply.....my apologies to everyone, but it has been extremely busy around here with several things popping....anyway, there is no truth to the rumors that 8000 people are moving here from East St Louis...it is also not true that there is 1000 more coming from chicago, or 800 coming from Indianapolis, or any other rumor of the kind.  These are all rumors with NO truth to them whatsoever....we don't have the housing stock for those kind of numbers and we are not zoning any land for additional section 8 housing.  I hear these rumors EVERYDAY and they are nothing more than wild statements and scare tactics.  So you can squash all rumors about more section 8 coming to Danville.....it is not going to happen.  Thanks.

Now the question is, is it okay for bs and vrm to pick off the feathers 'before' they eat crow?

Is that the only productive comment you could make in this thread? No ones worked up Greg.....you can settle down yourself though. And its always funny that the mayor is always having problems with his pc or just dont have the time when we ask questions....sorry folks I dont buy it. And furthermore I dont believe everything that comes out of City Hall.

vrm - if you don't believe anything out of City hall, then why do you want the mayor to verify anything?  Unless you take the opposite of his response to be true, you're talking out of both sides of your mouth.  Agree or disagree with him is fine, just to demand a response and then say you don't believe anything he says sounds a little out there.

I'm at a loss as to understand why anyone thinks East St. Louis is "profitable" from Section 8. If this were true (which it absolutely is not), why isn't East St. Louis thriving? Why is it consistently one of the poorest places in the nation? Why does it have a higher crime rate than New York City?  I believe someone posted that they have light rail access, which is true, but do you not realize that there are wealthier communities east of E. St. Louis too? I encourage anyone posting on this thread who honestly believes the mayor is encouraging residents from this area to come to Danville to actually visit this place for a couple days--you will see that there really isn't any money to be made whatsoever off of Section 8 or public assistance residents. This just defies all logic and sense. If you don't believe what I'm saying, check these descriptions out:

I agree there is no money to be made from section 8 housing. Why then in that excuse why did they see it fit to bring in Chicago residents, We did that and no one thought we were stupid enough to do it.. Whats up with that? I am glad he said it was not true, I believe he is a man of his word and I'll believe until I have facts saying other wise.
Thank you Jam but Politicians do things that make you go Hmmm All the time I cant believe you are so surprised we would think this could have been true before Scott cleared it up for us..

please reread my post, I never said I dont believe anything out of city Hall......I said I dont believe EVERYTHING! Meaning some i do, some i dont.  And if you do ........you are the foolish one and they have you right where they want you.
