Chartered in 1964, The First
in Illinois
The
Illiana Genealogical and Historical Society, the oldest society in
Illinois, was formed in 1964 to make it easier for people to do
genealogical research in this area of Illinois and Indiana. In the
last 37 years the library has moved from a classroom at Danville
High School, to the Danville Public Library, to a store front on
East North Street, to the present library located at 215 West North
Street, which was the former Berhalter Funeral Home. The Society is
governed by a Board of Directors which includes a President,
Vice-President, Recording
Secretary, Corresponding Secretary, Treasurer, Librarian, Research
Chairman, Membership Chairman, Cemetery Coordinator, Historian, and
three
Directors.
The library has grown over the years, to become one of the largest
in Illinois, and is continually expanding to fill the needs of our
patrons, who now come from all over the United States and some
foreign countries. Attributes of our library include:
Over 10,000 volumes on the shelves
Quarterlies from over 300 other Genealogical Societies
Over
100 rolls of Microfilm
Over
5000 Microfiche sheets
Complete sets LDS Compact Disks (CD’s) on Ancestry and IGI files
Miscellaneous CDs pertaining to Census and Land Records
Family histories provided by the authors
Pedigree charts provided by our members and others
Most
prolific in publishing of books for sale
Computers and printers
An
all-volunteer staff
The library is
open six (6) days a week: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mon., Wed.,
Thurs., Fri., and Sat. On Tue. the library is open 10:00 a.m. to
8:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come in and use the library
facilities to research their family genealogy.
Membership is $20.00 plus $1.00 for a spouse, Youth
Membership (12 to 18) $10.00, Lifetime memberships - $300.00 plus
$30.00 for a spouse.
