I want your Illinois Highway History! (In this case, Vermillion County highway history.)  Gathering info on U.S. & State highways (non-interstate) for future book project!  Calling all current/former owners of gas stations, motels, restaurants, etc.; or employees of such; or anyone who vacationed on or knows about IL 2-lane highways; or just reg'lar people!  All info is relevant--even what you think may be trivial.  I can tape record you, take notes, or send you a questionnaire.  Or you can simply call or write me!  Your choice.  Pass on your memories--stories, tales, facts, knowledge--and help me preserve Illinois road history!  Email: owens.james@insightbb.com.  Phone: (309)862-1863.  Address: Jim Owens, 1629 Erin

We’re working on a family geneology project and are looking for Herschel Lunger.
We traced him to his last-known address of 1112 North Gilbert Street in Danville,
Illinois in the late 1920s or early 1930s.  We know his parents were Richard and
Susie Lunger, and that Richard died in 1958 and Susie died in 1953.  Any information
anyone can provide on Herschel and what happened to him would be greatly
appreciated.

IN REFERENCE TO THE FOGHORN ON LAKE VERMILION, IT IS PROBABLY BEING CONFUSED WITH THE TORNADO SIREN SYSTEM THAT WAS IN PLACE THROUGH AT LEAST THE 80'S. THERE USED TO BE ONE OF THESE THINGS ON DENMARK ROAD. I REMEMBER IT WELL. IT HAD HORNS MOUNTED OMNI DIRECTIONALLY AND RESEMBLED A GIANT FOGHORN. REMEMBER...EVERY FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH @ 10:00 SHARP..(TESTING)

They still have a warning horn go off on Sunday AM over on the west side of the lake

I used to work at Central Foundry in Danville and met my wife there.  We are coming
up on our anniversary and was putting together a slide show of pictures and would
like to include a picture of the foundry since we met there.  Would you happen to

a picture.  My phone number is 314-422-5312 if you have any questions.  Thanks in

For years now my grandmother has told my brothers and I stories about a town named
"Denmark" that use to be where Lake Vermilion is now.  My grandmother cleans houses
along the lake shore and most of the older owners know of the town also.  I have
searched endlessly to find something about this
"Denmark", but have been unsuccessful.  Does anybody know of anything about this
town, and where I am be able to find documentation?  Thanks!

Yes it is true, the town is under water by the causeway crossing the lake near the start of Denmark road

I am hoping someone can help me here. My mother-in-law has a very, very old picture of some family members. We were trying to figure out what year it was taken because it is not listed anywhere on the document. We believe it was taken in the late 1800's because of the clothing that they were wearing. On the bottom of the photo  (it is a hard copy, kinda of like cardboard but a lot thicker) it says this: "W.Boyee Danville, ILLS". How can I find out when this was in Danville so we can have a time frame of how old the photo is? I tried searching on the internet but it doesn't
come up with anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please settle a bet for me. Does Danville have a fog horn near Lake Vermilion.
I appreciate your help. My father, who grew up in Danville, swears there is a fog horn on the lake. I think he's nuts but, hey, I've never been there.
Many thanks~

There is no Fog Horn since I have been here and I am on the lake. However; We really do have a light house.

I saw that you had a page on this site for Danville Area Radio.  After viewing this page and the frame containing some of the stations on the side, I noticed that 980AM
WITY was for some reason not included.  WITY is located in Danville, but not listed, while some of these others aren't even in Illinois (no offense to them, they are good as well).  Could you please add in WITY?  I, and many others that I know, would
greatly appreciate it!

For any specifics on WITY 980, please e-mail me back at
Enterthegecko657@sbcglobal.net   Thanks again!

The mailing address:
980AM WITY
P.O. Box 142
Danville, Illinois 61834

The physical address is on Spelter Avenue.

Thanks for your inquiry..
Every once in a while we get this question on a business or organization. If you read the opening remark on the first page of this portal you will see the answer:

"What we do and why...

First this website is a "Portal", a compilation of direct links to this area's locally established Businesses, Agencies, Organizations, and Informational Websites. If a company or organization does not have a website you will not find them here...."

As you see. Only the East Central Area (Around Danville) organizations WITH websites are included on this portal since it is a Electronic directory of area WEBSITES.
NOTE: If anyone has a Website address for any local area company not on this site please send the URL to us for free inclusion. Mail to

I am currently working on my family tree and searching for any information on my relatives. Both of my father's parents were from Danville, Illinois. My grandfather's name was Earl Hafner, born August 14, 1907. My great-grandfather's name was Edward Hafner, born in 1882. He was married to a woman named Janet who was born in 1890. They had four children that I'm aware of. They were Earl, Norman, Harlon and Max Edward. According to the 1920 census they lived on W. Seventh St. Edward's father's name is unknown, but I do know he was born in Germany. Earl Hafner was married to Gladys Pruitt who was also from Danville. Hi I live in Texas now but My dad was born and raised there and hasn't been back in a long time. I am interested in my grandmothers house at 802 martin and would really appreciate it if someone could take a picture of for me. It has been 13 years since she passed and I just want to see it. Also is that now a bad part of town. A coworker was going to get the picture for me but could not find it and some locals told her not to go back to that side of town because of some race wars going on. any response would be appreciated.

This address is in an older part of Danville and there are "Good & Bad" folks everywhere - it's people that make a part of any place good or bad - but there has never been any "Race Wars" in Danville. Hopefully someone will get a photo for you -let us know.

While cutting across Williams I drove up Martin. There is no 800 block (never was) the house on the corner at 702 N Martin is probable the house ( Pic at left - click to enlarge)

COMMENT:
I think the 800 block of Martin street that the lady was looking for is the first block north of Fairchild. To who. ever took the picture of the house for her would go to the first st north of Fairchild on bowman turn left and come down Martin you might find the right house That block is one way south I hope I am right.
Thanks we'll check it out..

Dear Mayor:

I was wondering when you were going to take the time to fix the numerous potholes, which are completely destroying my appearance, and making unhappy drivers out of those folks who fall deep into them while getting to and fro in Danville? My Friends (the other streets) are wondering why it is taking so long for you to make it an issue to fix us? We were wondering if you personally have fallen into any of the deep holes throughout the city? They wanted me to also ask you why you felt it necessary to spend money on studies of traffic patterns, when we (the streets) are deteriorating before your very eyes? We ask these questions because we want to be fixed. We want to be smooth and not cause the great VOTERS of this city headaches from constant pothole jumping.

PLEASE FIX US!!!! I want to thank you for your time,
Best regards....Vermilion Street

We rarely reply or post a response to a post that has no email address, but this will be an exception. While this is to the Mayor, the administrator of this website will reply since it was submitted to the message Board...

Dear Mr Vermilion Street.... What has happened to your memory? Didn't your ever read the name on the side or your repair trucks? "State of Illinois Dot" means just that. The state of illinois repairs, and is 100% responsible, for your "potholes". If you are hurting please write your governor. The City of Danville has NO jurisdiction for State Rt 1 and has enough problems getting money for repairing our other streets

I am hoping that someone can assist me in getting a list of Illinois Service men and women who are serving away from home. My husband and I own a business and would like to do a promotion for Memorial Day, which would include getting pre-paid phone cards that we would send to those service men and women. I have asked around to people I personally know who had family overseas, but have not had any luck. If there isn't a way to get a list, if I can be directed to an organization that would be able to forward the cards for us that would work also. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me either by e-mail toshab1998@hotmail.com or work # (217) 446-7112.
Thanks so much.

Hello Danville!  In the pass, I've posted messages on here in search of any information about a man named "Denny" Dickson (or Dixon).  Though I still haven't been able to locate him I feel that (thanks to you) I'm getting closer.  I've had a couple of leads. Considering before I discovered this website I had zero, I would like to say thanks.  It's nice to know that there are still people out "there" that are willing to take a few minutes out of their busy schedules to complete a kind act for a total stranger.  It definitely has helped restore a little bit of my faith...

You might try joining the Forum and posting the details- We have hundreds of readers a day on the Forum too.

( I ) like what I see on your website, and am glad to see good people responding to each others needs and comments. I would like to see such a site, a little more business based, small local businesses could advertise, and even comment and interact with each other.
  I was born in
Danville Illinois in 1955, and raised in the general area. I now live in the neighboring area of Covington Indiana. One thing I've noticed is that both areas are loaded with good people, and both areas have declined as far as businesses are concerned.
Maybe if a site like this were dedicated to small locally owned businesses who may not be able to advertise on radio, or tv it might help the community to developed. Oh by the way, I’m a small business owner myself, so this idea might appear a little selfish, but maybe
not if you look at it from the point of what it might do for the people in the area. Some might decide to start businesses of their own, with such support.

Your comments are of particular interest because that is why the Portal was built in 1999 and apparently we have failed to get the message out– awareness of our area’s businesses is the primary purpose of the Portal. We promote locally owned businesses. All business with websites get a free listing  on the Portal. We build small business websites starting at $175. In addition to two prominent  links to area business, on the Portals first page since 2000 is:

What we offer to help everyone prosper

In addition to an area wide Portal, BEAMSCO offers the local community Website production for any budget. Sophisticated Internet Marketing Techniques including Catalog-inventory shopping carts, Software, Hardware and related computer services. Interactive Web sites, Shopping Carts, Online Menus, Community Surveys, Product and Service Polls, Instant Wireless Order Fulfillment, and computer Wireless networking in Businesses and homes are but a few of our existing  services, including tutoring.

Whether your Businesses is large or small, in a business park or at home, we can place your products and services online... we make it easy for Local Shoppers to find your products and handle all the transactions and even arrange deliveries, (no need for credit cards, or expensive shipping) .

Active Home Entrepreneurs will find a platform from which to display, sell, or trade your home made products and services. And you can place all your unneeded items in our Classifieds Ads.

I joined your forum about three weeks ago and I have been a lurker ever since. I am almost afraid to post as it seems to me that this forum is quite a bit one-sided. Our forum out here is just a bunch of people having fun all of the time. I do hope you can get this one straightened out soon.

I am from Danville and I must say that I am very surprised but I guess things change everywhere.

Sorry you have this view. I do not follow it closely as we have a volunteer moderator that tries hard to make the forum exactly as you describe. To date your “people having fun” view was my impression of the folks on this form - and this is the first such negative view of this nature that I have received. I will forward your comments to him. Steve

I am looking to retire in or around Danville.  My roots run deep there back to the earliest pioneers and settlers of Danville up to when I moved away.  I am thinking on returning to my home town and retiring in a year or so.  Hope to hear from some folks as to where to live in Danville...would like to be in an active, progressive community.  I am Swedish ancestry and I am wondering if the Swedish community is active, has a local church or any activities that involve the Swedish community.
Like to hear from any of you who any suggestions for me and my wife about 'coming home'.
Thanks

Gosh we sure don't know of many Swedes here but there are a lot of good folks here -  and a lot of Andersons  - hope you move back. Go to http://allarounddanville.com/Edirectory/realtors.htm to see lots of great buy for 20% of California prices

I love your website. I wish Covington had something like this. I was reading your gas prices and would love for you to mention Covington's. I seen on your message board that some one had asked you why you haven't and you said no one had offered. I manage Casey's in Covington and I see a lot of Illinois people, as well as you all see us at Wal-Mart, Kmart, Sears, the mall and so on and so forth. Would love to have you visit our little city on the Wabash. Right now as of today our gas prices are 2.37 for regular and 2.34 for super. Please call me if you have any questions. Thank You Lori Carter manager

Lori I would be pleased to post the Covington gas prices daily. If you will send them, GREAT. Sometimes you a are higher (like today, we are $2.34 reg.) but generally you are a little lower. We come to Covington ,often on the way to Indy, and love Esters for lunch. Thanks for the compliments too. Also we are working on a plan for a Western Indiana Portal in 2006. see Fuel Prices

Danville,
I grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and took the trip more times than I can remember down 74 to Danville, where my Grandma lives. I've recently finished a book that I'm self publishing, with Danville as a primary location. It will be out in about three months. If you like young adult adventures in the vein of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, this will be right up your alley. The book is titled The Dragon in the Woods and follows the adventures of three brothers as they try to rescue their older brother from the clutches of a dragon.
Looking forward to hearing Danville's response!!
